How to protect your home From a Flood!
Floods happen - beside rivers, on the coast, in deserts, along city streets and behind protective levees. But you can take steps before the flood to protect your home and family from disaster. Some things can and should be done immediately. Others require a licensed professional. However, each change you make will increase your home’s resistance to flood damage.
When there is risk of flood:
Clear drains, gutters and downspouts of debris and make sure your yard’s grading (slope) directs water away from the building.
Anchor fuel tanks. An unanchored tank can be torn free by floodwaters, and the broken supply line can cause contamination, or if outdoors, can be swept downstream and damage other homes.
Buy and install sump pumps with backup power where needed. Regularly check to make sure they are working.
Cut off electrical service at the main breaker if the electrical system and outlets will be under water.
If you have time to hire a licensed electrician:
Raise electric components (switches, sockets, circuit breakers and wiring) at least 12” above the projected flood elevation.
Place all appliances, including furnace, water heater, washer and dryer on masonry... Does This Seem Right To You? One-Day Notice for Repairs In Our Building Today when I went out I noticed that there were signs tacked up on the entrance doors of our apartment building. Back in May our building went through a re-wiring thing, and all the apartments were re-wired but at least we got a week's notice about that, as everyone had to stay home all day, while the work was done. But they didn't finish...the whole idea was to re-wire to place in circuit breakers in each apartment, but there was still finishing touches remaining to be done before the electrical system is switched over to the circuit breaker systemSo today when I went out, like I said I saw these signs tacked up announcing to the tenants that the electricians are going to finish up the work, and it's to be done TOMORROW between the hours of 7a.m. to 5 p.m. Okay no problem..BUT In order to do this, our electricity has to be shut down that whole time---Is this right? First, only giving us tenants a one day notice to begin with, and then to have to have our electricity shut off so many hours? Like hey! What about our food in our refrigerators and freezers? Luckily I don't have too much food in the freezer, but I do have frozen chicken, hamburger, bags of vegetables, ice... The Things We Take For Granted It funny how we can take things for granted and not realize the impact it has in our lives until we're without. Today the electricians came to our building to rewire in the basement to get everything hooked up and ready to eventually switch our electrical system to circuit breakers rather than the old fashioned fuses. By doing this, it meant that the entire electrical system had to be shut completely off throughout the building from 7 a.m. to only just about an hour ago (3:30 p.m.). I must say it was an eerie sensation not to have electricity at all. How often do any of us take is for granted, that all one has to do it flip a switch, and viola, we have light, or turn on the radio, or stereo, or TV, knowing that it will go on. When I woke up today, I couldn't even put on the radio on to listen to the news or music while I ate my breakfast. Or and don't ask the computer withdrawal symptoms I was having...LOL..and even once the electricity was turned on, I had some job get my computer up and running...I had completely shut it down and unplugged everything including the internet connection and don't ask how long it took me to get that... No more getting angry with my kids I told my kids today that there is no more getting angry that I was just going to keep punishing them until they got it right, and I had a long talk with my son that wants to be a fire fighter yet doesn't seem to comprehend math being essential to fire fighting...But I just have had it, it came to a boil when my son said he thought that an instruction was temporary when we got home adn he did do 'some of what I asked, but then stopped and did what he wanted to, and then he pulled the I forgot routine, so my kids got a lecture, and tomorrow when they come home they are all going ot clean, I had to go in the basement today to check breakers, and needless to say it was a mess, it was teh first time in a month and a half that I have been in the basement, I have to have my landlord get an electrician over here as plugs have stopped working and I checked the circuit breakers....We'll see what happens.....but if someone comes over to check electric wiring, I have to say that I nHAVE to have the house clean....and I still can't do much...no more....I just punish with grounding nd taking privlidges away.Mooch Another one bites the dust..oh clixmx... Hi guys...
First of all, I would like to say that i was SO CLOSE in reaching the payout here. 9.49...tsktsk. So anyways, it's not such a bad thing. We are close to a disaster when I was trying to pull off the stunt. The circuit breakers went down bad, and there were sparks there and the ceilings was so close to getting burned. Thank God it didn't happen, so the heck with my payout. I'll still gonna get it this December anyways. I thank God for not letting harm befall us.So back to topic...Another one bites the dust. CLixmx, yes, that program which I came to trust(and I was about to do a PTC sustainability discussion with that one too) was OUT. You can read about the admin's message in the site.I just found out today, but it's because I have a bookmark that goes straight into the surf ads section. So when it was the third time that certain 404 showed up to my face, I was curious and checked out the main site, and found out about it...So he wasn't a scammer, he says. But then, it's stupid. I think PTCs should state how the hell they earn money in the first place, so that members will be convinced that with all the crap going on, DDoS attacks and stuff, they can... Landlord, tenant and neighbor relations I put this under relationships because all regular interactions are in their own ways relationships. As many of you might know, I lived with my mother for more than a year as her caretaker. I moved back into my apartment at the end of January. While I was gone, a former neighbor from the house next door moved into the unit under mine. From day one, she started complaining whenever my daughter had guests and would follow my daughter whenever she went downstairs to do laundry. She had no problem having regular get-togethers of her family and friends, but my daughter seemed to be forbidden to have a life. She would even have HER mother call me at MY mother's house to complain about it (I still owe a kick in the slats to whoever gave them MY mother's number). It didn't matter how early it was, my daughter having company was a problem for her. After I moved back, I was in the basement with the landlady who was showing me where I could store my stuff. She wouldn't even let us in the basement until we told her who we were, despite the fact that she doesn't rent the basement and that's where the laundry is. She sat on the stairs listening to every word we said and commenting when she... Do you call a tradesman everytime something goes wrong in your house? Things breakdown all the time, circuit breakers trip, faucets leak, washing machines stop running, door knobs not locking, refrigerator is not getting cold etc etc. Are you courageous enough to try and do troubleshooting and minor fixes depending on the nature of the problem and call a repairman when you can't solve it?Are you scared that you might make the problem worse and would rather pay to get them fixed?Labor cost nowadays are getting more and more expensive and many are educating themselves on doing things that will help them save like minor fixes. How about you?Any idea on this?
